After growing up in New Jersey and graduating from Rutgers University, James Gandolfini (Lou) began his acting career in New York theater. His Broadway debut came in the 1992 revival of "A Streetcar Named Desire" with Jessica Lange and Alec Baldwin.
Gandolfini's breakthrough screen role came with his portrayal of Virgil, the philosophizing hitman, in Tony Scott's "True Romance." His feature film roles have ranged from John Cusack's brother in "Money for Nothing" to Geena Davis' plumber boyfriend in "Angie" to a loyal Navy lieutenant in "Crimson Tide." In addition to Tony Scott, James has worked with such prominent directors as Sidney Lumet, Anthony Minghella, Barry Sonnenfeld, Martha Coolidge and award-winning French director Alain Corneau.
Other notable motion picture credits include the recent "She's So Lovely," "Night Falls on Manhattan," "Get Shorty," "The Juror," "Terminal Velocity," "Mr. Wonderful" and "A Stranger Among Us." Television credits include Showtime's telefeature, "12 Angry Men," and HBO's series, "The Sopranos." His upcoming feature projects include Peter Chelsom's "The Mighty" and Steve Zaillian's "A Civil Action."
