Embeth Davidtz (Gretta Milano) came to the attention of critics and filmgoers alike when she was cast by Steven Spielberg in his Academy Award- winning epic, "Schindler's List." The Indiana native moved to South Africa at age nine; she eventually studied drama and English literature at Rhodes University in South Africa, graduating cum laude with a Master's degree in drama. Following her role in the politically sensitive film "A Private Life," she won a contract with the South African National Theater Company and spent three years performing in a wide variety of roles in classic and contemporary theater.
Working both in English and Afrikaans, Davidtz won critical acclaim in such plays as "Stille Nag" and "A Chain of Voices," for which she received a Dalro Award nomination (the South African equivalent of the Tony Award). On film, she was also nominated for a Vita Award (the South African Oscar equivalent for Best Actress) for her role in "The Night of the Nineteenth." She relocated to Los Angeles and was cast in a lead role in Sam Raimi's "Army of Darkness." It was her role in the mini-series "Deadly Matrimony" that brought her to Spielberg's attention, which led to her role as Helen Hirsch in "Schindler's List."
Later this year, Davidtz will be seen in Robert Altman's highly anticipated thriller, "The Gingerbread Man." Other feature credits include Marc Rocco's "Murder in the First," Merchant-Ivory's "Feast of July" and Danny DeVito's "Matilda," as well as the original Showtime drama "The Garden of Redemption," directed by Thomas Michael Donnelly.
